My Experience — The Part That Actually Matters
I've used Preply for two languages: months of Tamil a few years back, and several weeks of Darija this year. Here's what stood out across both.

So I was speaking a lot right from the beginning — and I've found that speaking itself helps you remember things far better. Your pronunciation also improves from one lesson to the next. Darija has a few letters that are very hard to pronounce; I managed to get some of them right fairly quickly. Not perfect yet, but I could tell I'd made progress there. Every so often you can even see how much you've spoken versus the tutor, so you realize whether it's just a front-of-class lecture or whether you're genuinely participating.
Another plus: we actively used the whiteboard during lessons to write out the dialogues and vocabulary. My tutor would then always send me the entire whiteboard as an image in the chat, so I had all the content at a glance and could review it at home. Overall, I get the feeling you build a little friendship with your tutors — and learning with friends is twice as much fun.
